About us

Northern Rivers Community Gateway is a registered charity, providing grassroots support to marginalised and disadvantaged people in our region for nearly 50 years.

What is the Be Connected program?

  • The aim of the program is to teach older Australians basic digital skills, build confidence and learn ways to safely navigate the digital world.
  • The program is funded by the Australian government.
  • More information can be found on the Be Connected website.

What is a Be Connected volunteer?

The Be Connected volunteer:

  • Provides in-person support to older people and teaches basic digital skills e.g. how to use Google, how to use a smart phone, how to strengthen their online security.
  • Is confident with digital devices and applications, and is happy to share their insight and experience with older people.
  • Must be patient and positive in their approach to teaching digital skills.

Why should I apply for the Be Connected volunteer role?

  • This volunteer role will provide you with an opportunity to make a genuine difference in an older person's life.
  • You can create positive relationships with both older people and the wider Community Gateway community.
  • This volunteer role is not a huge time commitment (approx. 1 - 2 hours per fortnight), so if you are keen to help people but don't have a huge amount of time - this role might be for you!
  • We are committed to making sure you feel valued and heard, through recognition, rewards and special events.
  • As a volunteer with Community Gateway, you can access ongoing training opportunities to grow your skills and experience.

Important conditions

  • You must be over 18 years of age.
  • During your orientation, you will need to undergo a National Police Check, which is conducted and paid for by us.
