What We Do.

We believe the special human-animal bond is too precious to lose, and it’s our most vulnerable community members who need it the most. In times of crisis, when critical vet care is needed, they’re the ones most at risk of losing their beloved companion. They face the unthinkable choice between euthanising or surrendering their pet or getting deeper into debt, defaulting on rent and even losing their home.

We’re here to change that.

Our mission is to step up and break down the barriers to critical vet care, to ensure pets receive the care they urgently need, so families can stay together, happy and healthy.

We’re a lifeline for pensioners in crisis, alleviating emotional and financial distress with timely access to the support, resources and subsidised critical veterinary care they urgently need.

There’s a saying, “If you can’t afford to have a pet you shouldn’t have one.” We disagree.

It’s the most vulnerable people in our community who can’t afford NOT to have a pet in their lives. Their pets are often all they have and their only reason to get up in the morning.

The need is greater than ever.

As the cost of living continues to skyrocket, we’re seeing a rising tide of vulnerable families facing the unthinkable choice between euthanising or surrendering their beloved pet or getting deeper into debt, defaulting on rent and even losing their home.

About the role

Pet Medical Crisis is actively seeking volunteer social workers.

Working remote from home (or your favourite cafe) - you must be able to work autonomously but also collaboratively as part of a team.

A day in the life of a social worker at Pet Medical Crisis

• Assessing cases, triaging in order of urgency
• Contacting vulnerable clients and veterinary clinics to assess the situation and pets veterinary needs.
• Ensure all the required information is obtained.
• Contacting veterinary clinics to discuss treatment and costs.
• Providing support & guidance to pensioners during a stressful time.
• Making referrals to other support networks if needed.
• Experience the impact of your work firsthand. You'll witness the incredible moments of joy when vulnerable individuals receive the support they need to change and save their pet's life.

REQUIRED

• Hold a Masters/Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field such as Nursing or Counselling
• Computer literacy. Help Scout software is an advantage but not essential.
• Practical and solution focussed, we often have to think outside of the box to achieve the best outcome.
• Ability to work constructively and cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team and collaborate effectively with a range of external service providers.
• Minimum 10 hours weekly - flexible timetable
