Part time Volunteer CEO

Bicycles for Humanity Melbourne
Logo for Bicycles for Humanity Melbourne

By unlocking the value of recycled bicycles, B4H Melbourne enables a sustainable model that improves access to basic human needs within African communities.

B4H Melbourne was established in 2008 and is a 100% voluntary, not-for-profit organisation that collects disused bicycles and ships them to communities in need. The bicycles change lives forever by improving essential mobility for access to health care and education and increasing economic productivity. The container then becomes a pre-built bicycle workshop providing employment opportunities.

The CEO leads the organisation, working with the board, leadership team and broader volunteer community to achieve our short and long-term strategic objectives. These include increasing community awareness and engagement, encouraging volunteer contribution, enhancing bicycle operations, and building sustainable partnerships in Africa.

This position is becoming available as the current CEO and co-founder, Andy Finestone (Gild) OAM, has decided that the time is right to step aside. Andy will be part of the transition team for the new CEO and the new CEO will have the opportunity to shape the future of the role with Board input.

Meetings and time commitment:

  • This part-time volunteer role is based in Melbourne and is estimated to require an average of 8 hours per week.
  • The work is primarily virtual and out of business hours. However, some face-to-face meetings and activities will be required. These include bike packing days, strategy meetings, social events, or promotional activities, which are a lot of fun and take place on 4 to 5 occasions each year.

Candidates with the following skills and experience are encouraged to apply:

  • Previous CEO, Board or Senior Management experience
  • An understanding of the NFP sector, including fundraising experience, building a diverse volunteer group, and growing stakeholder engagement.
  • Understanding of governance and compliance with regulatory requirements, particularly for charities.
  • Established connections with African communities in Melbourne or in-country.

We encourage people from different backgrounds to apply, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, those identifying as LGBTQIA+, people from different cultural backgrounds and people with disabilities.
