Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) is a national for purpose organisation. Its purpose is to reduce the incidence and impact of macular disease – the leading cause of legal blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. MDFA has four pillars of work: prevention and early detection, supports and services, advocacy, and research and data.  

  Role Overview  The Clinic Outreach Volunteer is a pivotal role designed to promote the My Eyes service directly to patients at local eye injection clinics. The My Eyes service offers essential post-clinic support for people living with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by providing guidance, emotional support, and practical assistance to navigate their diagnosis and everyday challenges. 

  Key Responsibilities 

  • Promote the My Eyes service to patients at eye injection clinics. 
  • Engage in meaningful conversations with patients, explaining the role of MDFA, the benefits of the My Eyes service, and how it can assist them. 
  • Distribute informative brochures and resources about macular diseases and the My Eyes service. 
  • Collect patient information securely, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to MDFA guidelines. 
  • Maintain accurate records of activities and interactions with patients. 
  • Attend comprehensive training sessions provided by MDFA to effectively represent the foundation and the My Eyes program. 
  • Commit to volunteering one business day per week for a minimum of 8 weeks at the same clinic.  

  Desirable Skills and Qualities 

  • A friendly personality and positive attitude, with a natural ability to converse with others. 
  • Strong empathy and the ability to understand the challenges faced by individuals receiving eye injections for macular disease. 
  • Knowledge of or a strong interest in eye health, chronic disease management, or related fields. 
  • Highly organized, with an ability to manage detailed information securely and confidentially. 
  • Commitment to the vision, mission, and values of MDFA. 

  Qualifications 

  • Background in health, eye health, medicine, or a related field is advantageous but not mandatory. 
  • Experience in or understanding of living with chronic diseases, particularly eye diseases, is highly regarded. 
  • Training specific to the role will be provided, so a willingness to learn and engage with the provided educational resources is essential.
