Director (Media & Communications background)

Kaleidoscope Human Rights Foundation Ltd.

Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) – Volunteer Board Director (Media and Communications)

We are seeking a director to join our dynamic not-for-profit board.

We are looking for candidates who:

  • have experience in media (mainstream and social) and communications;
  • are members of, or allies to, the LGBTIQ+ community. An ally is a person committed to promoting and protecting the rights and freedoms of LGBTQI+ people

Directors can be located anywhere in the Asia Pacific region as our board meetings are always virtual. There may be occasional in person events in Melbourne, e.g. strategic planning day where funded travel and reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses will be provided.

About us

Kaleidoscope Human Rights Foundation (‘Kaleidoscope’) is an Australian-based non-for-profit organisation that is committed to promoting and protecting the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people (LGBTQI+) in the Asia Pacific region. Working directly with local activists in diverse nations, we seek to enhance their capacity to combat prejudice, hostile authorities and discriminatory laws, helping them achieve the freedom and equality essential to living a life of dignity.

There are currently six directors of Kaleidoscope and no employees. The directors govern and participate in the activities and functions of the organisation according to their skill sets on a voluntary basis. The board holds monthly virtual meetings and, in between meetings, directors commit time to projects according to their availability and the organisation’s needs.

For further information about our mission and activities, please visit our website.

About the opportunity

Kaleidoscope is seeking a passionate and community-connected individual with skills in media and communications to join the board. At present, we are a board made up mostly of lawyers and we are seeking to diversify our skill set. We are looking for someone who can:

  • lead the design and implementation of a media and communications strategy;
  • draft media releases;
  • help with the development of engaging social media content; and
  • liaise with external media agencies.

The skills and experience required for this role are as follows:

  1. Qualifications and/or experience in communications, journalism or community engagement.
  2. Knowledge of digital media platforms, preferably with basic skills in producing, editing and posting content.

Although there is no requirement for directors of Kaleidoscope to be members of the LGBTQI+ community, the governance and strategic direction of Kaleidoscope (set out under the heading ‘About us’ above) requires that all board members are passionate about and aligned with the goals and activities of the organisation.

Should you have any queries in relation to this role, please contact Chair of the Board, Professor Paula Gerber by email: paula.gerber@monash.edu.

Please submit your expression of interest (including a letter outlining your passion and suitability for the position, as well as your CV) via email to admin@kaleidoscopehrf.org by 5pm on Wednesday, 10 April 2024.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
