Independent Board Member

Community Legal WA
Logo for Community Legal WA

Community Legal WA is the peak body for community legal centres in WA. Our members are 26 community legal centres located throughout metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia.

Our purpose is to support and represent our members and work for a fair WA, where everybody has access to justice.

Key objectives of our work are to:

  1. Maintain a strong, capable peak body through good governance, skilled people and financial stability.
  2. Strengthen member engagement with our services, build sector unity and collective advocacy.
  3. Enhance sustainability, leadership, collaboration and service delivery across the diverse communities our members serve.
  4. Build and amplify the sector’s voice to influence Government policy and decision making, enhancing human rights and access to justice.
  5. Leverage sector data and Lived Experience voice to inform policy, funding and evidence-based practice.

Community legal centres are independent, multi-disciplinary, community-based organisations that provide free or low-cost legal help to everyday people, when they need it most.

Getting legal help in time can stop problems getting worse – keeping people in work, families in their homes and kids safe.

New opportunity CLWA is now seeking to appoint two or more independent board members, for the first time in our history, to work alongside board members elected from within the sector.

Expressions of interest are encouraged from accomplished professionals with:

  • a passion to use your profile, network and connections to advance justice for all in WA
  • skills in fundraising, corporate sponsorship and commissioning
  • commercial nous
  • a strong interest in the work Community Legal Centres do, as a movement.

We aim to appoint new members by May, ready to be onboard from June.

Why join us? The successful candidates will be attracted by our passionate and committed Board, our strategy and the chance to contribute to a new stage in our Board’s development – sharing external expertise, knowledge and governance perspectives.

This is a great opportunity for individuals who are aligned with our purpose and vision, to add value to a small but dynamic organisation - whose members make a genuine difference to the lives of people facing disadvantage. You’ll also be part of a national network of 160 community legal centres providing services around the country.

Community Legal WA encourages diversity of perspectives and experience, people from diverse backgrounds or with lived experience of legal need, are strongly encouraged to apply.
