About Eastern Health

Eastern Health is one of Melbourne’s largest metropolitan public health services. We provide a comprehensive range of high quality acute, sub-acute, palliative care, mental health, drug and alcohol, residential care, community health and statewide services to people and communities that are diverse in culture, age and socio- economic status, population and healthcare needs. The Eastern Health Strategic Plan Working Together towards 2025 guides the organisation to deliver on its commitments to the community and is made up of four strategic goals: enabled and empowered people; excellent care and experiences; safe and welcoming; and optimising resources.

Who are consumer representatives?

Consumer representatives are people who come from all walks of life and may be past, present or future patients or service users at Eastern Health as well as their carers or family members.

Position purpose

Consumer representatives volunteer by providing the patient, family and carer perspective; contributing patient experiences; advocating for the interests of current and potential service users from diverse backgrounds.

Collectively, consumers play an important role by ensuring Eastern Health works in partnership with members of the community in health service design, delivery, planning, governance and quality improvement.

Areas where consumer representatives are involved:

  • Developing and reviewing patient information and education resources -
  • Discussions around governance, planning, improvements, and changes in how we provide services
  • Involvement in projects and initiatives on quality, safety and patient experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a consumer perspective which is informed by their own lived experience and reflections as well as the experiences of other consumers
  • Identify and advocate for consumer perspectives in decision making
  • Be able to attend meetings and other meetings as negotiated
  • Show ability to work as a member of a committee
  • Participate in assessment and review of committee proceedings as required
  • Demonstrate commitment to safety and quality improvement in health services
  • Show commitment and ability to consult with a broader consumer constituency
  • Prepare and read material provided in preparation for meetings
  • Comply with the committee’s terms of reference and conditions of participation, including
  • confidentiality and conflict of interests
  • Maintain the appropriate skills and knowledge required to fulfil their role and responsibilities.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Be 16 years of age or over unless an exception is made by the relevant staff member
  • be interviewed as to your suitability for the role
  • undergo a Police Check
  • undertake induction, orientation and training
  • adhere to codes of conduct, privacy and confidentiality together with all other relevant Eastern Health policies.
