ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:

LLAMA is an acronym for League of Latin American Migrants Australia.

LLAMA is an educational not-for-profit organisation and registered charity which aims to provide free quality services, programs and activities that address the needs and challenges faced by the Spanish-speaking communities in Australia.

The free online English classes are for Latinos based in Australia and those overseas who are considering coming to Australia but would like to improve their English first. We are recruiting facilitators (Volunteers who speak English but don't have experience / studies in teaching English) to expand the number and range of our sessions.

ENGLISH SESSIONS: LLAMA runs different kinds of online English sessions from Beginner to Upper Intermediate level, between Monday and Friday in the morning, afternoon and evening by Zoom.

Each session lasts an hour and 15 minutes, and is delivered in a friendly setting without the pressure of being in a classroom. This allows participants to share their experiences with other people who are in the same situation. Group sizes range from 5 to 20 individuals. Students are assigned to you, so there is no need to build up your own student base.

THE ROLE

The role of the facilitator is to help participants build confidence in their English language skills. Participants are adult migrants from 18 to 65 of age, from a Spanish-speaking background. It is an opportunity to develop leadership, presentation, and facilitation skills. To participate as a facilitator volunteer, you should be a native English Speaker. You don't need a teaching background.

DUTIES

•Help participants to improve their abilities to speak, read, write and understand English.

•Engage with participants to build their English language skills through the use of pictures, simple texts, games and different online resources using Zoom.

•Develop class materials based on needs, abilities and interests of participants in consultation with English Program Volunteer Coordinator.

•Correct student mistakes either writing the correct answer via Zoom chat, or orally.

•Share experiences and expressions that are common in Australian culture.

•Participate in LLAMA meetings and Zoom app training.

•Fill out a short weekly report regarding the class performance.

•Provide advice / feedback to the English Program Volunteer Coordinator regarding the English sessions.

•Report concerns, needs or incidents to the English Program coordinator volunteer.

•Notify the English Program Volunteer Coordinator at least 48 hours before the session when a situation comes up and you are not available for the session.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Be interested in working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

• Have good interpersonal and communication skills.

• Have the ability to work independently.

• Reliability is essential.

Come and get involved with the exciting and vibrant Latino community. This is a great opportunity to get experience in a fun and casual environment, especially for people interested in engaging with the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community or in developing skills in adult education.
