The organisation

Migrant Justice Institute is a non-profit, nonpartisan law and policy organisation driving justice for migrant workers in Australia and globally through research and advocacy. As Australia’s only national and global migrant rights organisation, we work to end exploitation of migrant workers and hold governments and business to account.

We are a think tank, an advocacy group, and a communications hub. Using legal analysis and rigorous research, we develop innovative reforms that are grounded in migrants’ experiences – and then drive them forward. We closely collaborate with migrant communities, civil society organisations and trade unions to amplify migrants’ voices and mobilise for change.

We are a small, dynamic non-profit organisation led by law professors at UTS and UNSW, incorporated in 2021 following a six-year informal collaboration.

The Survey and our impact

A key upcoming research project is the 2024 edition of The National Temporary Migrant Work Survey - Australia's most comprehensive study of wage theft and working conditions among international students, backpackers and other temporary migrants in Australia.

The survey:

  • Gives migrants a platform to share their experiences in their lowest paid job in Australia.
  • Is a tool to inform migrants about their rights at work.
  • Helps us to develop policy directions and work with allies to create change.

Our research has had significant impacts, including new laws passed in February that:

  • mean it's no longer a crime to work in breach of visa conditions;
  • criminalise employers who coerce migrants; and
  • pave the way for visa protections proposed in our ground-breaking Breaking the Silence report.

Role description: help us reach migrant workers

This is an exciting opportunity for a social media strategist to use their skills to help a fantastic organisation that’s making a real difference in fighting exploitation of migrant workers in Australia.

The challenge

  • We need to reach international students and other migrant workers
  • Our key tools will be social media, networks and our Google Ads Grant
  • We lack sufficient knowledge of the social media networks used by our target demographic, and how best to reach them

Working with the Head of Strategy & Engagement you will provide strategic advice on the best approach, and ideally some hands-on support in rolling out this strategy.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
