The EAL Homework Club for Years 7 to 12 provides Secondary College students with support to integrate into their school environment, develop their English language and study skills, while improving their social connectedness. Students are from Refugee, Non English speaking backgrounds and tutors will assist the students to engage in group games, language learning and homework activities. This provides a rewarding volunteer experience within the Refugee settlement and Education environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Supporting students with their studies, including help with homework and revision
• Providing social support including positive role modelling
• Encouraging participants to form social connections with others in the group
• Communicating information with enthusiasm, clarity and patience
• Ensuring safe and appropriate use of the facilities and environment
• Follow confidentiality and workplace safety protocols at all times
• Observe the progress of participants and provide assistance as required
• Liaise with the Study Club Coordinator and advise on developments or requirements, and promptly report on any concerns

Skills, Experience and Attributes: Understanding of the academic topic - may suit ex teachers, university students or those who have recently completed Year 12 themselves.

• Ability to assist secondary students with homework tasks
• Ability to relate to students in a friendly, positive and professional manner
• Experience in assisting and/or working with young people at secondary level
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate cross-culturally
• Patience, flexibility and reliability
• Ability to commit to the program for at least one school semester commencing as early as possible
