Are you interested in how we respond to death? Would you like to make after-death care more personal, empowered and compassionate? We are looking for people to assist with bringing deceased people into our care from private residences, hospitals/palliative care units or aged care facilities by joining our Transfer Team as a volunteer. This is an opportunity to make a huge difference in your community and learn community-based death care skills.

The role exists to assist the funeral director to bring deceased people into Tender’s care, and to provide standard mortuary care on arrival, as part of our on-call Transfer Team, in line with Tender’s values, Credo and culture. No experience is necessary, we provide complete training and support for this role.

This team comprising staff and volunteers is often the first point of face-to-face contact with families (and children) as we begin to support them and they begin the process of entrusting their person to our care. This is a very rewarding role where you will have the opportunity to make a real difference for families and the person coming into our care. It is also an opportunity to provide education through experience to the people you meet on the job, and in your own circle.

To do this role you will need:

  • to be good with people and communicate well
  • good self-awareness and self-reflection
  • to practice self-care and to take advantage of debriefing opportunities we provide our volunteers
  • to be sensitive to interactions with people when discussing or responding to death and dying
  • be able to respond to strong emotions of others with neutrality, kindness and reflective listening
  • to be confidential at all times
  • good communication with our funeral director and volunteer coordinator
  • to be able to agree to our policies and procedures
  • to be able to contribute to a 24hr/7day roster
  • to be on-call on your nominated days/nights
  • capacity to undertake safe manual handling requiring a lifting minimum of 20kg
  • provide a current Working With Children Check

If you are interested and would like further information, please reach out to us with your questions via phone or email.
