Mentoring is one-to-one relationship between a young person and an adult who is focused on the young person's growth and development. It is different from counselling - it is less formal and more relational. Wesley Youth Mentoring asks its volunteers to commit to meeting face-to-face with a young person approximately four hours a fortnight (flexible to be one day a month) with regular feedback to the case manager supporting the relationship. Currently there is a list of young people aged between 12-20 waiting to be matched with safe adult mentors. To apply to become a mentor you must be over the age of 21, willing to undergo Working With Children Checks, Criminal History Checks, attend an interview and mandatory training day.
The mentoring match goes for a minimum of 12 months. The purpose of the program is to "equip" young people for change by providing a caring, interesting and positive adult volunteer mentor. Tell us why you would like to be a volunteer mentor.
