Weave Driving Change Program Office Assistant - Waterloo - #197356

Weave Youth & Community Services

About Weave: Located on unceded Gadigal and Bidjigal Land in Sydney, Weave Youth & Community Services is a place-based community organisation that has been delivering a range of programs, supports and services developed with and for the community for over 46 years. Weave’s purpose is to empower people to change their lives, and healing is at the centre of our work.

Weave’s origins date back to 1976, when a group of local Aboriginal women in Redfern/ Waterloo advocated for services, activities and support for local young people. We are grateful to those strong, passionate women. Today, our diverse range of programs and services support children, young people, women, families and communities, many of whom have been impacted by systemic disadvantage and intergenerational trauma.

As a result, the people we support at Weave often experience complex issues such as poverty, poor mental health and social and emotional wellbeing, domestic and family violence, homelessness, family breakdown, racism and discrimination, lack of access to opportunities, relationship issues, high levels of incarceration and alcohol and other drug issues.

As a non-Aboriginal controlled organisation, Weave is strongly committed to walking alongside Aboriginal people in their ongoing fight for justice and self-determination. Over 70% of all those we support across Weave are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Our work at every level is guided by our Aboriginal Healing Framework, developed by our Aboriginal staff group, endorsed by the Weave Board, leadership team and management and committed to by all Weave staff, volunteers, students and Board members.

About Driving Change:

Many people face barriers and challenges when it comes to obtaining a driver’s licence. Not having a licence can be a major setback in a person’s life, making it harder to find employment and holding them back from educational and social opportunities. Weave's Driving Change Program assists people to overcome these barriers by providing support with obtaining identification, studying for the Driver Knowledge Test, driving practice with volunteers and professional instructors, and preparing for the Driving Test. There are over 250 people on our waiting list for this support. We prioritise people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and people from refugee or CALD backgrounds.

We are looking for a volunteer office assistant who can help with:

  • Responding to enquiries about Driving Change

  • Assisting people to practise the online Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)

  • Assisting people to fill in the necessary forms to be able to get their licence

  • Transporting and accompanying people to Service NSW to attempt the Driver Knowledge Test in a Weave vehicle

  • Accompanying learners to Service NSW for Driving Tests in a Weave vehicle

  • Assisting with data entry and other office based tasks

This role requires:

  • Confidence in or willingness to learn Google Calendar, Google Sheets, and other online data management systems.

  • Compassionate and understanding attitude

  • Willingness to undergo training in Trauma Informed Practice

Benefits: Clients’ lives are enriched through the work of volunteers. Employees support volunteers and welcome the contribution they make to Weave’s work. Volunteer time and expertise is valued, applied effectively and appreciated.
