Mentors play a significant role in the development of young people. Volunteer mentors can reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness through providing an insight into local culture whilst being a source of practical advice. Interactions can be a positive safe place for youth to practice English language skills, identify goals, develop life skills, increase support networks and assist them to improve their individual capacity and wellbeing. The Youth Hangout sessions are held at specific times and locations each week during school terms. Group and individual Youth Mentoring may be at various times and locations. All volunteers are supported and guided by the facilitator/program coordinator.

  • Assist the group facilitator to run fun and educational activities at the Youth Hangout.
  • Support young people with specific issues, or to develop particular skills at group Youth Mentoring sessions or individually if linked with a young person by the coordinator.
  • Develop relationships with young people that creates a safe environment yet challenges them to move beyond their comfort zone and encourages personal development
  • Assist youth to develop life skills, improve their individual capacity and wellbeing.

Supporting people from a refugee background can be incredibly rewarding and satisfying. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of helping young people overcome hurdles they may have, and gain skills needed to thrive in their new home. Volunteers have the opportunity to develop personal skills and confidence, increase their community engagement, and gain a better understanding of the refugee and community services sector. Training is provided to all volunteers.
