Director and Treasurer for Community Bicycle Workshop

Back2bikes is seeking a Director and Treasurer to oversee financial administration, review procedures and financial reporting, and advise the other board members on financial strategy. The organisation has a volunteer bookkeeper. The Director and Treasurer will provide high level guidance to the bookkeeper. You will be part of a small committed board that ensures that Back2bikes is financially sustainable so that it can continue to have an impact in our local community and for the people in need of greater Melbourne.

Key Duties - Overseeing Financial Administration

  • Working with the volunteer bookkeeper using QuickBooks Online, ensure that up-to-date records are kept as well as an audit trail for all transactions

  • Protect the organisation against fraud and theft, ensuring safe custody of money, and prompt banking

  • Approve all expenditure

  • Make sure the organisation complies with tax regulations, such as GST, PAYG and superannuation requirements

  • Complete quarterly BAS statements to ATO with data provided by the bookkeeper

  • Make monthly payments to employed staff

  • Regular monitoring of organisations bank account

  • Ensure the board understands its financial position obligations on a regular basis

  • Review all internal processes and reporting methods at least annually.

  • Prepare annual budget of income and operating expenditure

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual report

Essential Skills

  • Sound knowledge of and experience in accounting for a small business (cash basis)

  • Capability and willingness to oversee the practical operational aspects of the organisation’s finances, including influencing direction

  • Experience of current corporate governance relevant to voluntary and community organisations

  • Strategic planning, critical thinking and influencing skills

  • Sound understanding of payroll, superannuation and GST

  • High level spreadsheet knowledge

Desirable Skills

  • Prior experience on a non-profit board or regular provision of reports to a non-profit Board

  • Experience using small business accounting software (QuickBooks Online or similar)

  • Professional accounting qualifications (e.g. Chartered Accountant, CPA or Diploma of Accounting)

  • Experience implementing a new point of sales systems
