Become a qualified First Nations Lifeline Crisis Support volunteer and help save lives.

In Queensland, UnitingCare delivers our 24-hour 13 11 14 Lifeline Crisis Support line, providing compassionate support to anyone experiencing a personal crisis. Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, our trained volunteers are ready to listen, provide support and refer.

As part of our reconciliation journey to strengthen the relationship and partnership with our First Nations peoples, Lifeline Queensland is pleased to be offering this nationally accredited training free of charge.

Volunteering with us you will be part of a small, close-knit team of supportive volunteers and employees at one of our call centres located throughout Queensland including, Bundaberg, Cairns, Ipswich, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Townsville, Mackay, Brisbane or Broadbeach.

Our nationally accredited training program connects you with experienced mentors in a culturally safe learning environment, to ensure you have appropriate cultural support throughout your entire journey.

We would love to hear from you if you:

  • identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • can bring your life experience and cultural knowledge
  • demonstrate good communication and listening skills
  • show empathy and have a non-judgmental attitude
  • volunteer for 4-6 hours a fortnight
  • willing to successfully complete the nationally recognised Lifeline Telephone Crisis Supporter training program

Training Requirements

Lifeline crisis supporter training provided on behalf of Lifeline Australia RTO 88036, is a requirement of this volunteer role.  The initial training consists of 10 topics delivered face-to-face and/or online, requiring a commitment of 6-8 hours per week followed by a commitment of 12 months to professional development and phone shift hours.  

The course fee of $550 has been waived thanks to funding made available.

Tasks involved include: â–ª Complete training to become a qualified Crisis Supporter â–ª Respond to phone calls â–ª Active listening

Skills Required: â–ª Good listening skills â–ª Empathy, Compassion and Self Awareness â–ª Commitment to helping others â–ª Strong verbal and written English communication skills â–ª A good level of computer literacy
