English Tutor
TAFE SATAFE SA is South Australia’s largest vocational education and training provider and has been delivering the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to new arrivals for more than 40 years.
The Volunteer Tutor Scheme (VTS) is part of the AMEP and assists eligible migrants and refugees to learn English and understand life in Australia. Students receive individual or small group lessons from a trained English tutor.
VTS staff train and match tutors with students in the home, at TAFE SA campuses, or in suitable public settings. Tutors prepare and deliver a weekly lesson of 1-2 hours duration and ideally work with a student for at least six months.
By volunteering to become a tutor you have an opportunity to:
- gain English language teaching skills
- meet people from a wide range of backgrounds
- learn about other languages and cultures
- assist migrants and refugees to learn English and become part of the Australian community
- receive newsletters and ongoing training throughout the year
- socialise with other tutors at informal events
