VIC Emergency Services Team Member Volunteer

The program

Australian Red Cross Emergency Services has been responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance in Australia since 1914. We are committed to strengthening and extending our emergency services to all Australians to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.  As part of our Emergency Services team, you will join a group of nearly 500 volunteers across Victoria ready to assist locally and across the state.

Red Cross Emergency Services Victoria supports people and communities before, during and after disasters.

The opportunity

Team Member positions are open State-wide. Red Cross Volunteers play a vital role in supporting communities before, during or after disasters.  As a Red Cross Emergency Services Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to support communities through community preparedness, providing support in emergency relief centres, or during recovery.  You will have the flexibility to choose how and when you volunteer your time. 

Examples of our activities include but are not limited to training activities, team meetings, community events, administrative support, as well as responding to emergencies.  

This opportunity requires volunteers to complete training and to maintain their skills training so they can support communities when needed.

You will have flexibility to decide when you volunteer your time and what activities you would like to be involved with. 

We are looking for people who:

  • Have a passion to volunteer with a humanitarian organisation.
  • Have the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Have personal experience in managing stressful, emotional and/or adverse situations.
  • Understand and respect privacy, confidentiality, and appropriate professional boundaries
  • Have good interpersonal skills and are reliable.
  • Can work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. 
  • We offer nationally consistent training to equip you with the right skills to support the communities we work in.  We are committed to building the capacity of our volunteer teams, so that you can make a real difference in the lives of people before, during and after disasters.

Your commitment:

  • Training in Psychological First Aid (1.5-hour online module and 6-hour webinar or face-to-face workshop)
  • Mandatory e-learning modules (x10) – duration approximately 9 hours
  • Complete onboarding within 3-month timeline

The Emergency Services program aims to assist individuals and communities before, during and after a disaster whether you are providing personal support (Psychological First Aid) to people affected by emergencies, helping communities prepare for or recover from a disaster or support training and operations. In all of these roles, you will be making a real difference.
