Road Safety Speakers' - Rosebud

At Amber Community, we believe people who have been personally impacted by road trauma play a critical role in raising awareness. We are committed to educating the community about road trauma and how it affects people's lives. We do this by positively influencing driver attitudes and behaviours to reduce crashes and the resulting trauma.

In the Rosebud Region, we are looking for people with a 'lived' experience of road trauma to assist us in changing cultural beliefs and creating safer drivers locally through education, information, and the sharing of your personal road trauma stories.

Our volunteers are the faces behind the statistics that we hear so often reported in the news, and the familiar faces you see around town. Each of our volunteers has a unique story and perspective on road safety. Our Volunteer program gives people who have experienced a traumatic experience on our roads the opportunity to change the driving behaviour of other road users who share the roads we drive on.

"I think it's not about a sense of my purpose, but perhaps gives meaning and significance to the person that died ... it ensures they are remembered as significant. Even in death, they continue to have purpose and meaning."

Our program uses a restorative justice model to let people impacted by a traumatic event to promote road safety in their local communities. Our volunteers tell their stories in a safe, supportive environment to drivers to influence safer driving. After attending a program, 95 per cent of our participants commit to changing the way they approach driving, and our volunteer's stories play a huge part in that.

"When I begin talking, and I see faces change, and emotions show - I know attitudes are shifting. It feels great! There is no doubt these sessions make an impact on those that attend."

Our volunteers receive comprehensive training and are supported by our dedicated regional coordinators and counsellors.

There are opportunities to speak to a variety of community groups, schools, workplaces and driver specific programs.

Influencing change across the general community is a big part of this role and can happen as part of Government initiatives, enforcement strategies and general awareness through the Media.
