Visitor Information Service

City of Adelaide

Tasks: • To assist visitors with directions, brochures, maps, event guides and holiday suggestions for Adelaide, the wider metropolitan area and regional South Australia • Maintenance, restocking of materials in Visitor Information Centre and fulfilment of brochure requests • Optional task: to conduct ‘First Steps’ a free orientation walk for visitors to Adelaide, giving a brief introduction to the city, highlighting major attractions and events happening on the day.

Essential • Excellent customer service and able to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds • Able to work as a team member and individually as required • General knowledge of Adelaide’s tourist attractions & venues and community services • Competent computer, internet and typing skills • Ability to give accurate and clear directions • Interest in tourism and a passion for Adelaide and South Australia • Display a commitment to on-going learning and development of tourism product knowledge • Able to lift 1-2kg bundles of brochures

Desirable • Comfortable using any language skills if required by visitors • Able to work comfortably in a loud environment • Background in tourism or tour guiding.

Training & Induction

All volunteers must participate in the City of Adelaide’s: • Volunteer organisational induction • Site specific induction (inclusive of manual handling training and operating procedures where necessary) • Completion of the online Workplace Health and Safety module • Attend training provided by the Volunteer Supervisor to maintain or develop skills relevant to the role

Time Commitment • Shifts are generally 3-4 hours long, with morning and afternoon shifts available. Minimum commitment is once a fortnight • Volunteers are expected to attend on-going staff development and training sessions with a minimum of 5 sessions (10 hours in total), plus a Self-Training component of 10 hours. A total of 20 hours is required over a 12 month period. This is a requirement of the Tourism Accreditation Program.

Additional Requirements • All council volunteers are required to have a satisfactory current Working with Children Check. This will be provided and updated every 5 years by Adelaide City Council • Comply with all Council policies and procedures outlined in the Volunteer Handbook • Adhere to all Work Health and Safety instructions and advice provided • Where required, uniforms and personal protective equipment will be provided by Adelaide City Council to be worn whilst on duty • COVID-19 Vaccination - A fully vaccinated workplace will reduce the health and safety risk to our people, minimise the disruption to our services, and support our City to be resilient and recover more quickly from the health and economic challenges that COVID-19 presents. For all City of Adelaide employees, including volunteers, it is mandatory to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and to submit your vaccination status with your vaccination certificate
