A Community school requires volunteers to act as mentors for students.  The role entails meeting with a young person for at least 2 hours per fortnight, at an agreed place and time, and engaging with them through the pursuit of common interests. You will need to provide non-judgmental support and friendship, reinforce and encourage positive behaviours and decision making, assist them to develop and be accountable for their goals, commit to a minimum of 12 months with the same person and contact them at least weekly by phone.

You need to be friendly, engaging, have a generous and positive outlook, be self-confident and enthusiastic and be able to relax and have fun. You need to be able to establish communication in a non-judgmental and appropriate manner, be aware of your strengths and weaknesses and be able to ask for help and support.

You should be able to set boundaries, work well with others and be able to take the initiative. You should also demonstrate commitment and reliability whilst remaining flexible and sensitive to a given situation, have both the maturity and time to commit to an ongoing relationship with a young person.

You should have a range of interests that you may be able to share and be open to exploring and encouraging their interests. You need an appreciation of the diversity in the community, an appreciation of ethical issues, be entrusted to behave appropriately around vulnerable people and respect the confidentiality of information shared.

You will receive regular support and training. The role is Centrelink approved for eligible participants. Short term and out of business hours volunteering available. Police and Working with Children Checks required.
