Volunteer Counsellor
Pancare Foundation - BVRCThe Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Pancare Foundation.
Pancare Foundation is looking for an experienced counsellor or psychologist who is committed to a culture of care and empathy for the people we support. You will be responsible for providing emotional well-being support to patients, carers and families affected by upper GI cancers.
We are looking for someone who:
- can liaise with Pancare's PanSupport team to identify patients and carers who would most benefit from counselling support
- can effectively establish a rapport with patients and carers prior to and during sessions
- can refer patients to appropriately qualified mental health professionals, child and family health services or bereavement services when deemed appropriate according to professional standards, e.g. in cases of persisting anxiety or depression
- can adhere to all privacy laws and regulations, always maintaining patient and carer confidentiality
- is friendly, transparent and has proactive communication skills
Tasks and Responsibilities include:
- accepting referrals from the PanSupport team or wider team, scheduling and conducting counselling sessions according to PanSupport policies and procedures
- reviewing progress for each case weekly with the PanSupport team or when required
- managing counselling support terminations by patient/carer
- managing appropriate communications with patient/carer, e.g. referral to Pancare online support groups, newsletters or other communications
- maintaining knowledge of standards of care for pancreatic and upper GI cancers
The Counsellor's duties can be predominately delivered from an appropriate workstation in the home.
