QIMR Berghofer Animal Ethics Committee (QIMR-Berghofer AEC) reviews research projects carried out by QIMR Berghofer researchers. The role of the AEC is ensure that the care and use of animals for scientific purposes is ethically acceptable and that research involving animals are carried out in accordance with the code as set out by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council. Committee meetings are collegial and their function is to bring together various perspectives of members to consider the ethical implications of each research proposal.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

Applications are invited for people interested in joining our Animal Ethics Committee in the capacity of:

Veterinarian: responsible for providing expert advice on applications put to the AEC for ethical review, including but not limited to the appropriate use of anaesthetics and analgesics, and the effects of experimental manipulations on the health and welfare of animals. This person should have qualifications in veterinary science that are recognised for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Australia.

Animal Carer: a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Lay members: Community members who have no affiliation with QIMR Berghofer, and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education.

Applicants should have an interest in and commitment to scientific research and willing to acquire an understanding of the principles underpinning ethical research.

About the role:

The appointment is for an initial period of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Members typically attend 9 meetings throughout the year for which several hours’ preparation is required in reviewing research applications. In addition, members may sometimes be required to review applications outside of meetings. Meeting duration is approximately 3-4 hours. Previous Ethics Committee experience will be highly regarded, but not necessary as training will be provided.

Time Commitment:

Meeting agendas are sent to Committee members 1 week before the meeting, and projects must be reviewed before attendance at the meeting. The time required to review the applications will vary depending on the number of research applications, however, on average 3-4 hours per meeting round might be required.

Remuneration:

This is a volunteer position. Parking will be provided at Herston for members while on QIMR Berghofer-AEC business. All essential expenses incurred by members in carrying out their duties will be reimbursed.
