  • 6-month position
  • Flexible times | Mon – Sun | 1-4 hours per week minimum commitment
  • Join the World’s largest humanitarian network

The program

The Humanitarian Settlement Program offers vital support to refugees and humanitarian entrants settling in Australia, including one-on-one casework, basic household goods, orientation, and housing support. It also includes practical support like helping our client’s link with Centrelink, Medicare, schools and other local services.

The opportunity

Bilingual Settlement Support volunteers help clients navigate the great language barrier they face when they first arrive in Australia. You will work on an ad-hoc basis on weekdays to help refugees by assisting with practical settlement needs such as shopping together, catching public transport, and connecting the family with services in the community. Language groups needed include Dari/Farsi, Spanish, Arabic, Burmese, Tigre, Tigrinya, Tibetan, Haka, Mizo, Teddim, Karen, Karen S’Gaw, Oromo, Kirundi, Swahili, and Ukrainian.

HSP volunteers are friendly, accepting, and flexible individuals, who are motivated to support the learning and comfortable settlement of newly arrived refugees. All the areas within the program are supported by the Red Cross caseworkers and Volunteer Engagement Officer. Training and ongoing development opportunities are offered as part of the program.

The impact

Red Cross volunteers are a vital connection between refugees and their new communities. As part of the Humanitarian Settlement Program, you will contribute to creating a friendly and inclusive environment that will help refugees feel welcome. Your impact will be tangible, and you will see your contribution making a different to someone’s life.
