Do you want to help save orangutans, other Critically Endangered species, and the last rainforests of Indonesia?

The Orangutan Project is an international not-for-profit organisation working to save Critically Endangered orangutans through a broad range of holistic projects in Borneo and Sumatra.

We partner with local conservation organisations and work alongside local people and indigenous communities to safeguard Indonesia's remaininn rainforests and save orangutans, elephants and tigers from extinction.

About the role

We're looking for an experienced Event Manager to manage a fundraising event for International Orangutan Day (IOD) in Brisbane. You can expect to volunteer for approx two hours per week, with additional hours required in the final weeks before an event. You will also need to be able to attend each event to provide on-the-ground management.

This is a project-based role that will see you managing an event end-to-end, incuding concept development, sourcing venue and catering, promoting and selling tickets, risk management, and banking. Our Marketing Team will provide marketing assets such as posters, flyers, social media graphics and more, so you don't need to have design skills - just those all-important event management skills!

This is a voluntary position, working both online and in-person, reporting to the Volunteers Fundraising Manager (VFM).

Position responsibilities

  • Plan, manage and market fundraising events for Brisbane, with the first one to take place on Friday 19 August 2022 (International Orangutan Day)
  • Develop the event budget and marketing plan (with support where required from the VFM)
  • Implement marketing and media (with support from Marketing Team)
  • Promote and sell tickets throughout Brisbane
  • Manage the event in person on the night
  • Guide and manage volunteers on the night
  • Manage and address risks and hazards
  • Record and bank funds raised at events
  • Follow the organisation's policies, procedures and Code of Conduct

Key Selection Criteria

  • Minimum two years of experience in event management in a workplace environment
  • Experience in fundraising is useful but not mandatory
  • Proactive self-starter who is able to work autonomously with minimal guidance
  • Passion for conservation and sustainability
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills
  • Able to work online in the Google Workspace (training available if this is a new working environment for you)

About you

  • You're passionate about conservation and looking for a way to give back
  • You have time to set aside two to three hours per week for planning, liaising with suppliers, managing promotions and attending meetings
  • You absolutely love running events and are looking for something new and worthwhile to get your teeth into
  • You're based in Brisbane and can attend and run an event on Friday 19 August 2022
  • You're comfortable managing a team of volunteers (with support from the Volunteers Fundraising Manager and Regional Representatives)

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you!

After you’ve applied, please send a copy of your resume or an outline of your event management experience to our email address.

About The Orangutan Project

The Orangutan Project is the main brand within our parent company, Wildlife Conservation International (WCI), which also includes the International Elephant Project and International Tiger Project.

Initially founded in Australia by world-renowned primatologist Leif Cocks (OAM), we are an international wildlife conservation organisation that manages and supports holistic, grassroots projects to save Critically Endangered orangutans, tigers and elephants and safeguard the remaining rainforest ecosystems of Sumatra and Borneo.

Our holistic approach focuses on four key pillars:

  1. Legally protect forests
  2. Secure, restore and patrol orangutan, elephant and tiger habitat
  3. Rescue, rehabilitate and release infant orangutans and displaced and injured orangutans, elephants and tigers
  4. Educate and empower the local communities and indigenous people

The Orangutan Project highly values our wonderful volunteers and the enormous contribution they make. Our volunteers raise much-needed funds and awareness about the urgent need for conservation and forest protection. We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
