As a Backend Developer, you will be part of the Backend team within the Technology portfolio, helping us build and maintain our new Node.js API. Our product is designed to connect our students, tutors, and broader volunteering team.

Key Characteristics

Our Backend Developers should have:

• Experience with JavaScript and TypeScript
• Experience working with backend systems (e.g. Express, Fastify, Flask)
• An understanding of SQL and object-relational mapping (ORM)
• Self-motivation and a passion for learning
• Proven excellence in communication, organisation and teamwork skills
• Problem solving & decision-making aptitude

Key Tasks

Our Backend Developers are expected to:

• Create API endpoints within Fastify following REST principles
• Manage background tasks including automated emails and notifications
• Manage SQL database migrations and ORM models
• Maintain and update the API documentation for use in the React project
• Attend weekly team meetings and contribute to discussions
• Commit 8-10 hours/week to RESN tasks (flexible around uni commitments)
