Archivist to record the history of a small not for profit organisation

We are seeking a dedicated volunteer to assess and document archived publications, reports and photographs informing the history of Humane Research Australia. Formed in 1979, the organisation has an interesting history of its campaigns including archival footage and photographic and printed records including pamphlets and books. HRA hopes to display historical records at an exhibition at a later date.

The Archivist will :

  • ensure that created or captured records are appropriately classified and stored in order to facilitate efficient control and retrieval;

  • collect and appraise historical documents and archival materials currently held at HRA offices, Melbourne;

  • create and maintain archives for the collection to enable easy retrieval of information;

  • preserve objects, documents, and records, and copying films and audio tapes to reliable formats;

  • research and record the historical significance, origin, and value of archival materials;

  • establish protocols to assist for future archiving of materials.

We seek an archivist with a sound knowledge and experience in archival management including the arrangement and description of archival materials; ability to effectively develop and implement a records retention system; proven organisational skills; accuracy and attention to detail; good written and oral communication skills; strong IT skills and experience working with collection management databases and a high level of research skill to enable essential research about the origins and history of the archival collection.

It is also desirable for the applicant to have the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Applicants must have access to the internet and their own laptop or computer. Applicants will also need to attend the Fitzroy office for part of the time.
