Environment Centre Greeter - Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre

Brisbane City Council Environment Centres

Volunteer greeters at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre have the opportunity to engage with visitors, give away free native plants, and share their passion for Brisbane's nature reserves.

General tasks and responsibilities

  • Provide customers with information about the reserve and make recommendations about walking tracks
  • Share resources
  • Promote and share information about the upcoming Environment Centre activities.
  • Assist with the set-up/ pack up for activities, talks and presentations
  • Sign-on visitors to activities and collect survey responses
  • Administering the native plant and compost caddy program
  • Support the daily running of the environment centres, including: maintenance of the community composting hub, watering the pollinator garden, refill brochures and answering customer enquiries.
  • Proactively engage with visitors (both Children and Adults) in the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre
  • Deliver short tours of Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre
  • Proactively engage with visitors in the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre
  • Deliver “drop-in style” activities e.g. the centre touch table
  • Assist guided walks where possible
  • Optionally run\assist with programmed activities to engage visitors
  • Attend Team meetings and participate in further education programs
  • Record Volunteer attendance and interaction numbers every shift
  • Identify and report risks and hazards

Ideal candidate/selection criteria

  • Enjoys meeting new people
  • Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to communicate with and engage with people from all demographics (especially children).
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Comfortable talking in front of people
  • Has an interest in the natural environment and community engagement
  • Customer service or interp experience desirable but not essential.
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Volunteer BlueCard will be required, we help you obtain this if you do not have one.

Time required

We are seeking volunteers to fill a variety of greeter shifts.

Regular greeter shifts: 3.75 hour shift per fortnight on a rotating roster. These shifts are suitable for volunteers seeking an ongoing volunteer opportunity.

  • Saturday mornings 9am-12:45pm
  • Saturday afternoons 12:15pm- 4:00pm
  • Sunday afternoons 12:15pm- 4:00pm

School holiday activity support: Supporting customers and group bookings during times of increased visitors

Training

  • Induction morning, including: meet and greet, Code of Conduct, Zero Harm and general expectations and centre familiarisation

The Environment Centres will be hosting an information session for people interested in becoming a volunteer at Karawatha Forest Discovery centre. Please contact the Environment Centre Volunteer Coordinator via email to receive details of the session time and to register your attendance: KFDC@brisbane.qld.gov.au

After the information session all participants will be able to schedule an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator. Successful applicants will be invited to join the volunteer induction on June 17 at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre.
