Vinnies Friendship Volunteer - Compeer
St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn
The St Vincent de Paul Society aspires to be recognised as a caring Catholic charity offering 'a hand up' to people in need. We do this by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope, and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.
One of the Society's Special Works programs, Compeer is also an international program for people living with a diagnosed mental illness. The aim of the program is to reduce social isolation and combat the stigma attached to mental illness. We strive to empower participants to achieve equality, self-worth, dignity and trust through the power of friendship.
Compeer matches adult volunteers with participants in one on one friendships, based on sharing similar interests and hobbies. Once matched the pair meet up on a regular basis for planned social activities. This allows an authentic friendship to develop. Compeer works closely with local mental health services and other health professionals.
