BUSHWALKING AUSTRALIA (INC.)

Bushwalking Australia (Inc.) was formed in 2003 to provide a national voice for recreational bushwalking and help build strong and relevant state bushwalking bodies by providing a forum for State bodies to share experiences, research and material.

Key Role Statement

The Executive Officer will assist the Bushwalking Australia President and Council in the development and implementation of the Bushwalking Australia Strategic Plan, and its three goals:

Goal 1: State bodies recognise Bushwalking Australia as a valuable forum for exchange of information, research and experience to achieve mutual objectives.

Goal 2: Bushwalking Australia is recognised by governments and peer groups as an effective and influential national voice for bushwalking.

Goal 3: Bushwalking Australia assists State bodies in the creation of policies, positions, governance procedures and risk management.

Executive Officer Key Responsibilities

The Executive Officer will be required to:

  • Maintain and implement the Bushwalking Australia Strategic Plan
  • Prepare sponsorship, grant and project funding applications
  • Communicate effectively and maintain relationships with BAI’s membership
  • Facilitate sharing of work done, between State bodies (as required)
  • Identify, promote and help coordinate joint projects between State bodies on areas of mutual interest
  • Coordinate and provide submissions on recreational bushwalking-related issues at Commonwealth Government level
  • Prepare press releases
  • Engage with federal government, media, social media and public channels to raise awareness of relevant issues
  • On request, formulate policies, position statements and governance guidelines for voluntary adoption by state bodies
  • Provide advice and assistance to State bodies on procedures, governance, organisational change and risk management
  • Assist state bodies in formulating policies as requested
  • When required, assist the Bushwalking Australia Council progress one-of projects

Prerequisite experience

The Executive Officer should preferably have:

  • Organisational management experience, and
  • Knowledge of matters relevant to bushwalkers and hiking / bushwalking organisations.

Reporting Relationships

The Executive Officer reports to the BAI President. There are no positions which report to the Executive Officer.

Selection criteria

  1. Appropriate and relevant qualification or industry experience
  2. Excellent written and oral communication skills
  3. Ability to analyse and evaluate industry issues and potential solutions
  4. Ability to work effectively in a small team to accomplish strategic goals
  5. Understanding of, and experience with bushwalking in Australia

This role would suit an individual with knowledge and experience in working with not for profit boards on governance and risk management, excellent written and verbal communications, good teamwork and interpersonal skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office software and applications.

The role can be based in any Australian location and therefore requires a high level of independence and initiative.
