Mentoring is one-to-one relationship between a young person and an older adult who is focused on the young person's growth and development. It is different from counselling - it is less formal and more relational.
Wesley Youth Mentoring asks its volunteers to commit to meeting face-to-face with a young person approximately four hours a fortnight with regular feedback to the case manager supporting the relationship.
Currently there is a list of young people aged between 12-20 waiting to be matched with safe adult mentors. To apply to become a mentor you must be over the age of 21, willing to undergo Working With Children Checks, Criminal History Checks, attend an interview and mandatory training day. Mentors are required to travel to different areas within Northern NSW.
The mentoring match goes for 12 months (though there are possibilities for shortening or extending that time period). The purpose of the program is to "equip" young people for change by providing a caring, interesting and positive adult volunteer mentor.
