The program

The In Search of Safety Community Education Program creates awareness and challenges myths and stereotypes about asylum seekers, refugees and migrants through workshops that focus on two target audiences:

1. Primary & Secondary Schools (11 - 18 year olds) The program is an interactive educational experience for students in years 5-12. Each session runs for around an hour and a half, and is delivered to up to 30 students at a time by trained facilitators and guest speakers. Wherever possible, volunteers will co-facilitate sessions with a 'lived experienced' presenter. That is, someone who has a lived experience of the migration journey - most likely seeking permanent safety in Australia.

2. The broader community Conversations in the Community is available to groups in the community wanting to learn more about the real situation faced by people seeking asylum in Australia. Through informative and engaging presentations, we aim to improve public understanding of asylum seekers and help dispel the many myths and misunderstandings surrounding migration. Open to clubs, organisations, workplaces, communities and groups of any size, these community conversations give participants a valuable opportunity to hear real-life stories from people with direct and first-hand experience in seeking asylum in Australia.

The opportunity

This role suits someone over the age of 16 who is a good communicator and confident presenting information to groups. The Community Education Volunteers should have a strong interest in creating awareness and challenging the myths and stereotypes about asylum seekers, refugees and migrants, targeting primary and high schools in North, North-West and/or North-Eastern Tasmania. This role will require commitment during office hours and after hours as well as weekends if required.

The impact

As an In Search of Safety presenter, you will help build awareness and understanding of the real situations facing people who come to Australia to seek asylum. It aims to dispel the misunderstandings and myths surrounding asylum seekers through presentations, group work and guest speakers, in order to create a more welcoming Australia.

Wherever possible, you will co-present with a lived experience presenter.
