Parliamentary Advisor
The Role
The UNAA Parliamentary Advisor leads the UNAA’s engagement with the Friends of United Nations Federal Parliamentary Group. The Parliamentary Advisor manages the group and works with MPs, Senators and other UN agencies to organise the group’s schedule of events and activities.
Responsibilities
· Develop strategy to raise awareness in the Australian Parliament on the UN, the rules-based international order and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
· Drive Parliamentary Group program, working with Co-Chairs on calendar of events, including receptions for Members, Senators, Diplomatic Corps, and guests.
· Shape UN Parliamentary secondment program, working with Parliamentary Group Co-Chairs, members, and UN agencies on feedback and experiences.
· Meet with UN secondees, Parliamentary Group Co-Chairs and a members to prepare UN Parliamentary secondment brief to be endorsed by Co-Chairs.
· Work with Parliamentary Group Co-Chairs and their staff to support the work of the Parliamentary Group and the UNAA.
· Seek opportunities through Parliamentary Group for UNAA contributions and representations to Parliament, high level meetings and COAG meetings.
Selection Criteria
1. Exceptional leadership, organisational and communication skills.
2. Understanding of the Australian political system and experience working with MPs, Senators, governments and parliaments.
3. Experience managing and building relationships, working in a leadership role.
4. Experience working with and reporting to executive teams and boards, ideally including some experience in Secretariat roles.
5. Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the value of diversity.
6. Experience in volunteer and unpaid roles, with a willingness to contribute the times and skills required to do this role.
The UNAA
The United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) is the peak body for promoting the UN in Australia. The UNAA works to inform, inspire and engage Australians about the work, goals and values of the United Nations to create a safer, fairer and more sustainable world. We engage the community and support the work of the United Nations through:
· Events and programs across Australia on the issues affecting Australians such as climate change, progress toward gender equality, refugees, and issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples;
· Promoting the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, what they are, why they are important and the work currently underway;
· The UN Alumni Network – a group of Australians who are currently or who have worked in the UN system;
· The UNAA Young Professionals Network – a group of change-makers supporting young professionals toward a career working in social good and to create change;
· The Friends of UN Parliamentary Group of which the UNAA is the Secretariat - Chaired by Sharon Claydon MP and Andrew Lamming MP, with members with an interest in the UN across all sides of politics.
