Under direction and/or supervision of nursing staff, volunteers will provide care in the form of providing a soothing environment which may include:

  • reading a book or the newspaper aloud
  • hand massage (Only moisturiser/no manicures) on approval from Nurse
  • look through a Magazine with the person and ask about the articles/pictures.
  • board and card games
  • for patients identified by the Nurse as being stable, walking/being taken outside in a wheelchair within the hospital premises
  • setting up of crosswords or find-a-words
  • set up of Music via CD Players
  • provide non-clinical conversations with patients while sitting with them. Talk about current affairs, their interests/hobbies, life events, sports and pets.
  • provide patients with any diversional therapy aids that may be available including dolls, fiddle cushions, adult colouring etc.
  • enjoy a cup of tea or cup of coffee with them (please check with nursing staff if they are allowed to)
  • some patients may like to have their hair brushed.
  • social chats and reminiscence or crafts using photos and laminated pictures.

When not directly interacting with patients and or their visitors Volunteers could also assist with supporting the ward with some duties.
