Veteran Mentor - Young Offenders Program

Are you a veteran who would love to mentor a young person? Opportunity to be a part of a new mentoring program for young offenders in Western Sydney.
Funded by the NSW Department of Justice, the Veterans Young Offender Mentoring Program will help: *young people under the supervision of Juvenile Justice in the community *young people transitioning into the community from custody and *young people exiting from Juvenile Justice supervision
Benefits for Young People: There is strong evidence that mentorship programs such as this reduce re-offending by young people, and promote better life choices to enable an individual’s potential.
Other benefits for young people include: *development of new skills and increased self-esteem *improvement of communication and interpersonal skills *increased knowledge for healthy choices *ability to build a positive relationship with an adult outside of the family
Benefits for Mentors: Training, support and a non-military referee will be provided for mentors. Volunteer work is well received in the CV of job applicants in NSW Government roles and throughout the community. Participation would offer veterans the opportunity to share their wealth of experience by providing a positive role model for the young people transitioning out custody or community supervision. Additionally, it would provide community involvement and an opportunity to contribute to the perception of veterans as leaders in the community.
The Veterans Young Offender Mentoring Program builds on the proven success of the ‘Stand As One’ mentoring program which has been conducted at the Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice System since 2010.
Veteran Mentor commitment is once a fortnight 3-4hrs.
