The Volunteer Learning Club Facilitator assists in the administration of the Learning Club through the coordination and ongoing support of volunteer tutors and participants, and by liaising with key stakeholders to ensure students are well supported in their educational and personal development.

Through this role, volunteers provide critical, direct support for the educational and social development of disadvantaged young Australians to succeed at school, so they can create better futures for themselves.

What are Learning Clubs?
Learning Clubs provide a safe and supportive out-of-school learning environment where primary or secondary students can participate in activities that develop their academic and social skills. Students have the opportunity to access resources, expertise and assistance with their homework and curriculum content. Clubs usually run for at least 2 terms, and children attend once or twice a week for approximately one hour at no cost.

Learning Clubs may differ across the country according to community needs. For example, some clubs provide homework support, or literacy and numeracy tutoring to assist children and young people to benefit more fully from their school based learning.

Training is provided to ensure all new volunteers feel confident and equipped for their tutoring role.

Key responsibilities: •Liaise regularly with The Smith Family Program Coordinator to ensure they are kept informed about the overall delivery of the Club; escalate all matters relating to student safety or wellbeing •Support volunteer tutors with Learning Club activities, as needed e.g. developing session plans, tracking of resources, keeping attendance •Match volunteer tutors to students and monitor the effectiveness of these matches •Assist with the gathering and collation of student data for evaluation purposes
•Where appropriate assist with volunteer tutor recruitment and training •Assist The Smith Family team members to promote duty of care and child protection policies with volunteer tutors

Essential Competencies / Skills: •Good written and verbal communication skills •Exceptional organisational skills •Friendly and positive attitude •Ability to communicate well with young people •Ability to work independently as well as part of a team •Excellent interpersonal skills

Desirable Competencies / Skills: •Understanding of factors affecting students from financially disadvantaged families •Sound knowledge of primary/secondary subjects area as applicable •Broad understanding of the primary/secondary education system

Desirable Experience / Education: •Experience in volunteer management •Previous experience in working with children/youth
