Peer Educator - Getting Seniors On Board – Deliver public transport education sessions

COTA Peer Educators will deliver the education session to groups of older people.

The project aims to increase the confidence of older people to use public transport: Public transport is affordable, safe and reliable. It can be a lifeline to people by making family, health appointments, volunteering, shopping and fitness accessible.

However, for new users it can seem overwhelming, leaving them stuck at home.

We asked older people what works and what doesn’t when using public transport and used this information to develop an education session.

Peer Educators will be; • A public transport user • Able to lead a group education session • Be aged 50 years of age or more • Comfortable accessing the online transport information

Requirements (skills, police check, others). • National Police Check • Able to work independently and contribute to the COTA SA team • Good time management and organisational skills • Experience speaking to groups an advantage Able to maintain confidentiality of staff, Volunteers and community members. Willing to gain knowledge and understanding of the Work Health & Safety requirements of COTA SA. Familiarise yourself with the most up-to-date requirements and advice from the Australian and NT and SA State Governments. * As each organisation provides different levels/types of insurance, volunteers are reminded to check with the organisation as to the type of insurance provided for volunteers (e.g. Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance). * Best practice volunteer involvement recommends that a volunteer role should not be more than 15-16 hours per week.
