Horse Aid has developed programs to support the mental health and wellbeing of veterans and first responders affected by anxiety, PTSD, and emotional trauma. We also accept others with mental health challenges when space permits. We offer either a one day introductory or four-day immersive, residential program. Our practical, hands-on method allows participants to work one-on-one with an animal that mirrors their own emotions. This helps to identify areas of opportunity, such as lack of confidence or aggression. More importantly, it allows them to explore ways to control their emotions leading to self-belief, an increase in confidence, and ways to reduce their stress and anxiety. Social connections are developed via the skills learnt between horse and human allowing for better relationships with family and friends, in turn reducing feelings of isolation. Previous participants have reported a reduction in suicidal thoughts. Our healing partners are Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. These highly trained animals often leave their career in racing carrying their own physical and emotional trauma. Our ex-racehorses align closely with our highly trained human participants, with both being offered a second chance to heal through connection. Our participants can identify with a fellow being who may have been forced to leave their career path, come from a very structured and controlled environment, and who are struggling to adjust to life afterwards. All work in on the ground - no riding is involved, nor is any experience with horses required.
