Northside Community Forum Limited is an independent not for profit with 30 years experience in supporting 90,000 people with disability, people with mental illness and older people and their carers. Our unique service approach means that we assist people and their carers.

Disabled Alternative Road Transport (DARTS) provides the only door to door transport combined with social activity planning for wheelchair users across Northern Sydney Health District.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist as companion / carer to wheelchair dependent adults on day trips. This can include pushing wheelchairs, assisting with shopping and at mealtime if required. Helpers are also needed at specialised yoga classes to assist with movement of limbs and to work with members at art classes.
  • Engage in meaningful conversations with people living with a disability respecting clients confidentiality, choice, dignity and respect. Helping driver load passengers onto wheelchair modified via a hydraulic hoist. Assisting driver to safety clamp wheelchairs into a tracking system on buses.
  • Relevant laws and regulations, WHS, Privacy Act
  • Relevant industry standards and other Quality standards such as NSW Disability Services Standards, Homecare standards
  • Northsides organisational policies and procedures
  • Northsides customer charter

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to assist the companion / carer to wheelchair dependent adults on day trips
  • Physical ability to push the wheelchairs within WHS standards
  • Genuine caring and compassionate attitude
  • Support us by handling all company documentation in a professional and confidential manner
  • Help us by consistently adhering to Northside policies and procedures
  • Support us to enable individuals and families to connect to local services and natural supports, including social activities so that they can Live Their Best Life
  • Support us with knowledge in or understanding of people with disability, older people, carers or people living with a mental illness

Requirements:

  • Current National Police clearance check
  • First Aid Certificate is highly beneficial but not essential
  • Willingness to learn and be dedicated at least a day once per week
  • Previous support work experience preferable, with a focus on high quality customer interaction and dedication
  • A strong commitment to working with people with disabilities
  • Flexible, reliable and caring person with initiative
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • A reasonable level of fitness but no lifting is required
