Education First Youth (EFY) Foyers provide support to young people between the ages of 16-24 who are unable to live at home. EFY Foyers achieve this through offering young people practical learning tools and skills, access to education, training and employment opportunities, safe and affordable accommodation for up to two years, coaching and 24 hour on-site support from trained staff, opportunities to develop independent living skills.

The Mentoring Program in the EFY Foyers aims to connect students with an interested and committed adult who can help them explore their personal and professional aspirations for the future and provide them with guidance, support and encouragement in a confidential, non-judgemental, respectful manner. Like coaches, mentors work with students through this exploration, which equips the mentee with the tools to replicate good relationships elsewhere: this is considered a major positive outcome in and of itself.

Your duties would include: • Engage in social and recreational activities with mentee • Sharing knowledge about your own education, career and life experiences to assist the mentee in their education, career and life journey • Offer a consistent, non-judgmental relationship and encourage the young person into a range of other relationships • Help promote mentee’s self-esteem and identify/recognize their strengths • Help with goal-setting, suggest possible courses of action, support the mentee in making choices, and help mentee develop skills • Encourage mentee to weigh up situations and to come to decisions themselves through a process of reflection, questions, challenge and feedback • Encourage self-reliance instead of dependence • Provide feedback to the Relationships manager and complete a template noting outcomes of each session. Advise staff if you do not feel comfortable with any aspects of your role or if you have identified issues that need to be addressed by staff or issues that may be a safety issue to yourself and the participant • Notifying staff of any rescheduling or cancellations of meetings • Participate in program evaluation • Where appropriate and in consultation engage in other activities appropriate to the aims of the program
