The Monash Day Club is designed to increase the wellbeing, health and social interaction of people over the age of 65 in the Canberra community.

Day Club Members are picked up in the morning and taken through a day of activities either at our purpose built facility or for a day out to visit somewhere in the region. In the afternoon Members are dropped to their home.

The Gardening Expert will lead the project of establishing a robust community garden using the garden beds at the Monash Day Club located in the Goodwin Retirement Living Village at Monash.

The Gardening Expert will take the lead in working with Day Club Members to establish a planting calendar and actively oversee the garden beds, with assistance from Day Club Members and staff at the Monash Day Club.

The Gardening Expert will work with the Day Club Coordinator to review increased opportunities that the community garden may create for use of the produce in the wider Goodwin services such as the café or Residential Aged Care Facility. In addition, the Gardening Expert will communicate back to the Day Club Coordinator additional opportunities that the garden may create for community engagement.

Key responsibilities: The Gardening Expert will: • Take a leadership role in the effective use of the garden beds at the Monash Day Club • Work with the Day Club Coordinator to create activities with Day Club members to assist them to enjoy gardening • Plan the planting calendar for the garden • Source the materials needed (at a cost to Goodwin not he volunteer) to successfully grown the garden • Liaise with Goodwin staff about the community engagement and use of produce from the garden • Other duties as required

All volunteers are required to undertake and maintain a satisfactory National Criminal History Records Check (police check) in accordance with the Aged Care Act 1997. Attendance at corporate induction and associated volunteer training sessions is mandatory.

Work health and safety: • Participate and contribute to Work Health & Safety practices to ensure a safe work environment. • Movement of people requiring special assistance • Manual handling tasks – bending and twisting • High level agility required to be able to exit and enter buses • Food hygiene and safety considerations Time Commitment: • Goodwin Day Clubs are in operation from 08:30 – 16:30 Monday to Friday. • Goodwin is seeking the assistance of a volunteer to help with anything from 1 to 15 hours per week for a minimum of four (4) months.
