The Queensland Braille Writing Association is seeking volunteers to teach Braille to adults who are visually impaired, Monday – Friday at Braille House or on Thursdays offsite at a Community Centre. If you are interested in volunteering, you would have to commit to a minimum of 4 hours a week for at least 12 months. If you are a qualified teacher or trainer, this role may be suitable for you.

Teachers develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of students utilizing Braille. Teaching programs are delivered during the calendar year.

Teachers • are responsible for managing the tutorial program in the most effective manner to ensure improvement in student outcomes. • will implement effective teaching and tutorial strategies and will be accountable to the enrolled students. • provide Braille instruction and advice to sighted volunteers and family members who may assist current and future blind and vision impaired Braille learners

The following qualifications are preferred: • experience teaching students with vision impairment. • proficient in contracted, unified English Braille. • experience in training mainstream teachers in inclusive education strategies.

The following skills and abilities are required: • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines required. • Computer literacy required. • Ability to work independently with little supervision is required.
