Helpline volunteers need patience, a clear telephone voice and must enjoy talking to people
from all backgrounds Often callers may be distressed so a calm disposition is useful.

Training is provided and there is strong support from other volunteers and DBCA staff.

Wildlife knowledge is not essential, but a desire to help native wildlife is.

Some basic keyboard / computer knowledge is desirable as calls are recorded in a database.

Volunteers take calls and offer advice to callers. If there is a need, they refer callers to a further volunteer network of registered wildlife rehabilitators who can take care of wildlife before releasing back into its native habitat.

The Helpline also advises callers who have snakes in their property and refer callers to their nearest licensed volunteer reptile remover.

Benefits include working in a friendly office environment with full support from staff, tea, coffee, on the job training. Registered volunteers are eligible for the volunteer rewards scheme, which includes discounts and subscriptions to Parks and Wildlife publications and park passes.

Please note: there is no contact with wildlife in this role.
