Shelter volunteers are an absolute asset to our organization at Second Chance Animal Rescue. Our shelter volunteer program is run out of our Craigieburn facility and requires a minimum 4 hour fortnightly shift commitment. Volunteer shifts are either 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm. Our shelter volunteers are supervised by the day by our Animal Attendant who is responsible for their support and supervision. In addition, focused support and overall supervision is provided by the Volunteer Coordinator.

As a shelter volunteer you are responsible for helping the shelter run smoothly. This may include but is not limited to:

• -Animal handling
• Doing laundry
• Filling in observation sheets for every animal in our care
• Monitoring and noting any changes of the animals in our care
• Walking the dogs
• Dog enrichment
• Cat enrichment

As a shelter volunteer you need to have the following:

• Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions
• A love and passion for animals and their welfare
• Self control around animals
• Be a team player
• Be able to communicate clearly
• Be able to comit to 6 months or more
• A basic understanding of why disease control is so important in a shelter environment

As a shelter volunteer the following attributes are a plus:

• Previous animal behaviour education
• Previous animal handling experience, either cat or dog or both
• Animal husbandry experience
• Owning your own animals

To apply to become a shelter volunteer:

• You must be 18 years of age or older
• You must live within a 50 kilometre radius of our Craigieburn shelter
• You must have an up-to-date tetanus shot and a valid Working with Children Check
