Read Write Now is a dynamic organisation with approximately 650 tutors throughout WA working with adults on a one-to-one basis to help improve skills in reading, writing and spelling and sometimes basic maths. This all takes place in an informal setting, is all done by volunteers and is free of charge. The Read Write Now program is for adults aged 18 years and over. Priority is given to people who fell through the cracks in the school system here and have inadequate literacy. Other students need to be permanent residents of Australia and have lived here for 10 years or more.
Volunteer adult literacy tutors work one-to-one with people aged 18+ who seek assistance with reading, writing, spelling and basic maths. The majority of adult students are over 25 years of age.
Volunteer tutors are invited to participate in a 4 day training course. They are then matched with a student who they meet with once a week for about an hour and a half. All meetings are in a neutral public venue. Support and ongoing professional development is offered through a local group and the Central Office. Police Check is compulsory, however Read Write Now will pay for this.
