Volunteers sought to work with refugee students in primary and secondary schools for approximately 3 hours/week during school day. Minimum commitment of 1 year to provide continuity for the students.. Volunteers work with individuals and small groups of students in classrooms to help students understand and adapt to the Australian school system. Volunteers help reduce students’ sense of isolation and help build self esteem and independence. Volunteers assist with the development of literacy, numeracy and learning skills.

Desirable skills:

  • Interest in refugee issues and needs
  • Ability to work in a school environment
  • Active listening skills and patience
  • Ability to treat vulnerable people with respect.

A Working With Children Check is required for this role.

If you are successful in your application to be a Mercy Connect volunteer and approval has been given for volunteering to begin at a school, for your protection we ask you before you enter any school campus to confirm the COVID safety protocols for the school.

Benefits: This is an opportunity for volunteers who have experience working in an educational setting to utilise their skills and experience to make a difference to the lives of refugee students. Volunteers provide support that nurtures student well-being and builds self-esteem. Volunteers also provide insight and an understanding of different cultures.

Volunteers are provided with 3 x 2 hour zoom training workshops which will be held over consecutive Mondays prior to commencing their school placement. They will also attend quarterly volunteer meetings on relevant topics and have the opportunity to meet with their volunteer colleagues on a regular basis to share key learnings and issues.
