The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Camcare.

Are you looking to volunteer in a team environment whilst undertaking meaningful tasks? Join Camcare as a 'Community Support Worker' and work 1:1 with clients to provide referrals and information on material aid, community support and advocacy.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • To provide professional, non-judgmental, friendly and compassionate customer service in a manner that upholds the dignity and privacy of the client
  • To provide high quality information, emergency relief, support and referral services to clients in a confidential and impartial manner, enabling clients to make their own decisions and choices
  • To identify and assess client requests and needs in person or by phone, and provide crisis intervention and emergency relief, practical support as required (e.g. drafting letters, filling out forms), advocacy and negotiation support as appropriate
  • To refer clients to Camcare’s range of counselling and other client-based services
  • To refer clients on to other agencies that can provide assistance and support to best meet their needs
  • To provide accurate, up-to-date information to clients about services and eligibility by accessing agency information resources, e.g. Internet databases, written material, etc.
  • To provide an efficient and effective phone reception service
  • To accurately record details of enquiries handled via case record sheets, statistical collection forms and other information collection forms as required
  • To follow established agency administrative procedures
  • To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of issues and developments that impact on clients and the broader community
  • To complete a mandatory training program, conducted over 7 weeks attending in person for a 5 hour shift (once per week) alongside a mentor

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to work co-operatively with other staff as part of a team
  • Demonstrated empathy and a non-judgmental attitude to clients at all times
  • Capacity to exercise independent judgment and work autonomously
  • Ability to effectively work with people from various socio-economic levels and cultural backgrounds demonstrating an inclusive attitude
  • Capacity to be flexible and accommodate change
  • Willingness to learn on the job and to develop new skills as required
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated computer literacy in a range of software programs. Communication via email is required
  • Commitment to attend training sessions as required by Camcare
  • Reliability and integrity
  • Independent and proactive approach to work responsibilities
  • A strong customer service approach
  • Compassionate with an orientation for social justice
