Client Support

Volunteers provide direct support for clients, carers and families as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Respite for carers and companionship for patients and may also provide practical assistance such as transport and shopping. Volunteers are supported by the Co-ordinator of Volunteers.

Training

Five full days of training which has been accredited by Palliative Care Victoria.

Time required

One day a week with a maximum of 4 hours.

Volunteers need to be comfortable with people who are dying. Volunteers need to be self-aware and be able to deal effectively with their own emotional issues. To be able to be compassionate, good listener, non-judgemental, good communication skills and reliable. Those who have been carers for a dying relative are asked to wait 12-18 months after bereavement. There is also a need for Volunteers with a second language. Volunteers are required to undergo training. Volunteers need to have own transport and be able to drive.
