National Trust of South Australia

NOTE: This position requires attending meetings in South Australia so you need to live in South Australia

The National Trust is a worldwide membership organisation caring for special places and preserving them for the future. The National Trust of South Australia has more than 6000 members and volunteers who support our work to protect, preserve and promote our built, natural and cultural heritage.

We offer diverse volunteering roles for all kinds of interests and skills. Our volunteers work in our nature reserves, museums and other heritage places, but also behind the scenes, recording, describing and promoting our heritage, increasingly in an online environment.

We currently have a digital volunteering opportunity that would suit someone with administrative and computing skills. This role supports our vital work to recognise and protect the most notable and treasured trees in South Australia.

The National Trust’s significant tree register records and shares information about South Australia’s most significant trees, notable for their botanical and/or historical significance. The National Trust believes that trees form an important part of our natural and historic environment and should be given the same protection as built heritage places.

The register is a valuable tool in ensuring that the value of these trees is recognised and valued. This work is more important than ever with growing urban density and climate change impacting on the natural environment and the ongoing survival of this living legacy of both indigenous and introduced trees. The South Australian Significant Tree register forms part of a national register.

Purpose of the roles:

Your work will support a dedicated team of expert volunteers who compile the Significant Tree register and assess new nominations. Significant trees can be remnants of the bush, plantings by early settlers, Aboriginal sacred trees, important landscape or streetscape elements, or trees planted to commemorate important people or events.

You will also assist our digital team in making sure that information in the register is readily available online through websites and mobile apps. Your work will help to promote awareness of significant trees and to advocate for the protection of all trees.

Responsibilities

Nominations are lodged electronically and assessed by the STT. They meet every two months. The role would require:

  • Checking for on-line nominations before each meeting
  • Preparing a summary of the grounds for nomination
  • Providing summaries to the STT at least one week before the meeting
  • Attending the STT meetings and take minutes
  • Entering Significant Tree information into a simple database
  • Accessing the database when required by the STT

Approximate time commitment: a minimum of 4 hours per week is required, which can be worked flexibly, and for the most part, remotely.

Skills required:

  • Basic internet, email, typing skills
  • database maintenance

  • Minute taking for meetings of the nominations committee
