At Avonvale, we’re committed to provide enriched learning opportunities to meet the needs of each student.

The aim of the Reading Partner program is to develop life-long learners and recognises that literacy is the cornerstone of success in education. Children love to learn new things at school when they have developed an interest in reading. Children become confident language learners by reading books with adults.

The role will involve listening and modelling reading to children as a Reading Buddy. Using a Reading Journal to record, the Buddy will listen to the student, encourage them, talk about the text and model reading.

Our Buddies need to have a desire to help and encourage children and demonstrate a positive and uplifting approach. It is important to have an understanding of appropriate adult behaviour when dealing with children. You will be required to sign and abide by a confidentiality agreement. As you develop a relationship with the students you will also be seen as a community role model and mentor. It is essential to be patient, supportive, a team player and be able to deflect and allow teaching staff to deal with any behaviours that arise.

All Buddies will have an induction where processes are explained in detail. You will be well supported and recognised in your role which we are sure you will find to be very rewarding.
